headspace hotel
For as long as I can remember I have struggled with mental health issues. It often feels like I get trapped in spirals of negative emotions that seem like they will take over my entire life. During one of my therapy sessions my therapist shared a poem with me that really changed how I look at negative emotions. The poem is entitled Guest House and was written by Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi who compares the mind to a guest house. Emotions enter and you may not know how long they will stay or why they are there but eventually they will leave. For a little while prior to hearing this poem I had this idea that my head was a motel with no more vacancy for any other emotion or struggle.
